So What is a Micronation?

The term micronation is often used to describe the plethora of self-proclaimed nations and states that dot the world, and in recent times the internet. Micronations vary from serious 'new nation' attempts, often inspired by liberatarian ideals, to 'odball' secessionists, self proclaimed kings and to the extremely common 'non-territorial' nation (best described as an online community and often little more than an elaborate RPG).

Defining a micronation is difficult as so many varying micronations exist, often claiming that there interpretation of the term is the only true definition of a micronation.

A very good history of micronations and micronationalism, both online and in the 'real world' can be found on the Wikipedia at http://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Micronation

Another good set of definitions was compiled by the Kingdom of Torhavn and is availible at http://www.geocities.com/torhavn/faqs2.html

Information on founding your own micronation online has been compiled by the President of Molossia and is availible at http://www.geocities.com/micronations

An extremely useful index of micronations and related concepts can be found at www.microfreedom.com

A useful micronational resource website is www.micronations.net

A popular inter-micronational discussion forum www.micro-nations.org
